Globetrotters
Arts & Culture Camp
Last
summer, The Arts Center's expanded Globetrotters Arts &
Culture Camp was a big hit:110 students in grades 1-7 explored
the arts and cultures of Africa, the Americas, South Asia,
and the Middle East. All summer, red Globetrotters T-shirts
flashed through The Arts Center's neighborhood as campers
hiked to the library and Multicultural Literacy Center for
classes, raced around Central Park during break times, and
walked down Madison Avenue for a tour at Burst's Candies.
Campers sculpted elephants, maracas, and Taj Mahals out of
clay; painted and collaged and printed; wrote haiku and learned
about endangered species and conservation. They cooked an
Ethiopian meal; learned traditional African drumming rhythms;
performed a South African Boot Dance on the da Vinci Days
stage; painted kolams on the sidewalks, and learned about
South Indian music and dance.

High
school student leaders and fabulous arts instructors ensured
a high-quality experience for this summer's campers. Our organizational
partners -- The Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center, the
Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, FASIS, the Corvallis
Environmental Center, and First Alternative Cooperative --
helped us create a rich and expanded Globetrotting adventure.
Special thanks to Patrick McGee for welcoming campers into
Bursts Candies for lunchtime tours and to Wee Tree Farm for
providing bonsai at a discounted cost, which allowed campers
to plant a bonsai in pots they created. Hurray to our Globetrotters
and their parents, to our talented teachers and camp leaders,
and to all the friends of The Arts Center who support arts
education. We are already looking forward to next summer's
Globetrotters camp!
